Fi & Col Sheppard established Flaxman Wines in 2004 when they purchased the property and made the vine-change move across from Melbourne.
Their vineyard sits in the very beautiful and picturesque Eden Valley in the Barossa region and includes 3 acres of Riesling, 2.5 acres of Shiraz and 1/2 acre of Semillon, all planted in 1929. Small parcels of Grenache, Mataro, Chardonnay and Cabernet are also purchased to broaden the line-up of wines on offer. The grapes are hand-picked each year and Colin makes all the wines onsite (except the Riesling) - so during vintage, visitors can observe the wine-making process first hand.
Being a builder in Melbourne, Colin has, over time, built a Cellar Door, an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven and outdoor dining area to add to the ever changing landscape of Flaxman. The Cellar Door is now open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, and the outdoor kitchen and dining area are utilised for the long lunches held on the 1st Saturday of each month or for Private functions.
In the current 'unusual' climate and to keep Col happy in the kitchen, a home cooked dish is now available on Saturdays and Sundays and the food option will change weekly - watch this space!
Bookings are essential. Call 0411 668 949 to book - Seating strictly limited.
I'm Col, a Builder turned winemaker who also happens to enjoy cooking a bit as well. I'm the lucky person who rarely feels like I go to work and I guess when you are indulging your passions, how can it feel like work? As they say, luck favours the brave and it was our brave leap of faith that has us living in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Come and say hi and you will understand why I will never work another day in my life.
MEET THE TEAM
Hi. I look after these two boys on either side of me. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. I'm a bit of a jack of all trades here, so on my days off, I can be found in the office working on the website, doing the book work, marketing and helping out in the vineyard and winery when and where I am needed. I look forward to welcoming you to our Cellar Door or hosting you at one of our lunches.
I'm Gus and I'm an 9 year old staffy and the Cellar Door Manager here. I'll be here to greet you when you arrive and won't let you leave until I have won you over. I also work in the vineyard with Col most of the time, love getting caught in the nets during picking time, enjoy a good game of ball but mainly I just love to be around people.
I look forward to seeing you at our cellar door sometime soon.
